Ideas for Publication and Celebration of Student Work

Writers Celebration (aka Authors Night)
At Salmon Bay we just wrapped our first "Authors Night". This event was held in the evening by students for families. We had several stations for student hosted events, including: 3 stations for student readers, table with "published" narratives, poetry, and essays, and tables where students hosted tours of their writers notebooks. Kathleen - my amazing teaching partner - inspired the creation of hanging a string of tissue paper flags with students' discoveries about writing written on them as decoration. She also thought of having student's portraits next to their work with a writer's bio on the back. The visual effect was amazing, adding a striking and colorful visual component to the presentation. The walls were decorated with quotes from students and posters made of lined butcher paper with students' poems and illustrations.
The event featured three 15 minute sessions. Students were responsible for participating in each session and had a few options for their level of participation. One of the things we decided was not to require students to read their work. We provided a point requirement and a menu of options for students to reach the required points. Notebook tours and reading were given higher point values. I'm attaching a copy of our "Job Descriptions for Authors Night" and a few pictures of the event.
